Mike Cambridge
Mike Cambridge graduated with an honours degree in civil engineering from the University of Surrey in 1970 and for more than fifty years’ was engaged on the planning, design, construction, and operation of mining, water and environmental projects throughout the world. His principal specialisation throughout his professional career has been dam engineering, metalliferous and non-metalliferous mining projects as well as hydro electric power and water resources. In particular he was engaged in the design, construction, operation, closure and monitoring of tailings and water dams and mine waste dumps including direct corporate and statutory appointments for the inspection and safety auditing of reservoirs, waste disposal facilities and associated structures, mining, quarrying and water projects. He has held appointments for both statutory and compliance purposes for the auditing of mine waste facilities and water dams throughout Europe and until August 2019 was an All Reservoirs Panel Engineer under the UK Reservoirs Act and a Competent Person under UK Mines and Quarries legislation. Finally he has undertaken expert reviews of mine projects for the European Commission, Governmental bodies, local authorities and financial institutions, including both permitting and due diligence reporting with direct experience of expert witness and public inquiries.
He worked extensively in Europe both as a participant and as scientific expert on a wide range of European Research projects and was one of the experts providing technical advice on TC292 (characterisation of mine waste). Most recently he was appointed as the UK technical expert and Convenor of TC396 (European Earthworks Standard) and was co-author of prEN16907 Earthworks – Part 7 - hydraulic fill. In addition he was the lead author and editor of the Springer publication Hydraulic transport and storage of extractive waste, European Guidelines.
He has authored more than 50 papers on technical and environmental aspects of mining, quarrying, dam engineering and waste disposal. In 2018 he was invited to present the biennial Binnie Lecture to the British Dam Society conference.
